Sun Tea is a beautiful way to support your mineral intake during the hot summer months. It’s a better option than plain water because it contains more minerals and nutrients. Plus, you don’t have to boil water on a scorching hot day!
What does remineralising even mean?
I’m talking about getting the minerals back into your body that have been depleted through stress from the environment, toxins, tap water, or even your personal life and relationships. When we are in a minerally depleted state our hormones are imbalanced, our digestion is off, we can’t sleep, and our energy levels are wonky. And, since stress is pretty much a constant in one form or another so we really want to focus every day on remineralzing our bodies. (Learn more about why minerals are so important to hormone health here.) Sun tea is one amazing way to do this.
And, it’s easy!
Sun tea is basically made by placing herbs (fresh or dried) or loose tea leaves in a jar, covering them with water, and letting it sit in the sun for several hours (3-4 minimum). That’s it! The heat from the sun causes the tea to slowly infuse into the water, making an herbal infusion. This draws the active components out of the plants into the water.
Some herbs to try
Nettles has 428 mg of calcium per cup and is also high in iron. Alfalfa has a mild, green taste and is also high in calcium, B vitamins, and vitamins C, D, E, and K. Horsetail is a mineral-rich herb that supports bone growth because of its high silicon content. Other good options are red clover, dandelion and raspberry leaf. Mint can be added for flavor and other minerals. You can find more sun tea recipes here.
When the tea is ready, strain it and pour into a clean jar. Place it in the fridge to chill. Or you can drink it at room temperature. You can also add cucumber, berries, fresh orange or lemon juice to infuse your water with additional nutrients. Sweeten it with honey or maple syrup if you’re into that. Adding trace mineral drops is another addition to boost mineral content.
Where to find your herbs
If fresh herbs are not growing locally in your area, I like Mountain Rose Herbs for organically and sustainably grown dried loose herbs. They also sell amazing tea blends and are offering an awesome selection as one of the prizes for the Simpl Wellness Challenge this year!
Use clean water!
What is the use of making mineral-rich sun tea if you’re using chemical-filled tap water? You’ll definitely want to use filtered water for this and I recommend Aquatru for reverse osmosis purification that turns any tap water into water that you can trust. (You can also win filter systems from Aquatru this year if you’re in on the challenge!)
